It’s been a long time since I’ve ice fished. 1994 to be precise. Back then, we didn’t have a shanty, we didn’t have flashers, we didn’t have ice rods, but we had a ton of fun.
It’s now 2013. We got shelters that are nicer than my dorm room, ice rods and reels that keeps your finger from being shredded, sonar devices that tells you if you got a fish chasing your bait, and I hope the fun and excitement should still be the same. Because in 2013, I am about to hop on the ice and hope to show my kids a great time. Since it’s been a long while since I’ve ice fished, I decided to enlist the help of Dan Byrnes(aka Pondboy) to show us how it’s done in the 21st century. To make sure the kids stay warm and have fun, he asked DA Pro Jason Jelinek(aka DarkStar72) to help out and a great event was born.
When we got to the pond, PB and D* were all set and ready to go for us. The kids warmed up to them immediately and was comfortable within 5 minutes of meeting these 2 crazy anglers. Dan was like he had jumped through a time warp back to being 8 years old again and was singing and laughing with Brendon and Matthieu the entire time.
Dan and Jason had their sonar and underwater cam set up so the kids can watch the fish react to their lures. Matthieu got right into the fun and pulled a few bluegills from the hole in the first 15 minutes and caught total 12 fish before we lost him to Angry Birds and Sponge Bob.
Brendon took the slowly but surely approach. He was truly interested in ice fishing and was trying to learn as much as he can about it. He managed to land about 30 fish including a few nice little crappies. At one point he was on fire with the bluegills, pulling them out one after another.
After 4 hours of non stop action, I had to round up the kids for some lunch and rest. After they awaken from their nice nap, they could not stop taking about the great time they had ice fishing with Dan and Jason:
All I can say is Pondboy does it again!
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. If you are looking for someone to help refresh your angling endeavors or a crash course into the sport, Pondboy and his Dupage Fishing Guide Service should be right at the top of your list.
